Weather Summary for December 13, 2014
Location: Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
An upper level ridge of 570-576 meters covered the Upper Midwest Today with late Afternoon H85 temperatures of around +14C — both of these are incredibly high and quite rare for mid December here in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The downside to this is the continuation of low clouds, fog, and drizzle across the Northland Today thanks to the abundant moisture streaming north out of the Gulf Of Mexico plus additional moisture in the atmosphere thanks to the melting snow. High temperatures were in the mid 30s to low 40s with southerly breezes at 5 to around 20 mph.
Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight through Sunday Night (December 13-14)
Low pressure remains to our west through Sunday Night while a cold front moves east into the Upper Midwest from Sunday Afternoon into Sunday Night. Fog and drizzle will persist in the Northland with some light rain also possible at times Tomorrow and Tomorrow Night as we get some additional lift with the approaching cold front. The fog will be dense at times with visibilities down to zero. Temperatures from Tonight through Sunday Night will be in the 30s and 40s. Winds will be out of the south or east at 5 to 15 mph.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: High.
Monday through Wednesday (December 15-17)
Low pressure exits to our south/east for Monday and Tuesday. Light rain or a wintry mix of precipitation is possible over northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin from Monday into early Monday Evening; temperatures aloft and near the surface will cool down from NW-SE allowing the rain or mixture of precipitation to switch over to snow Monday Night.
Note: This still does not look like a major rain or snow event for the Northland, but there could be enough snow accumulation to create hazardous driving conditions Monday Night-Tuesday Morning especially in eastern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin the way it looks now.
High temperatures on Monday will be in the 30s and 40s with lows Monday Night in the teens and 20s. Highs on Tuesday will be teens and 20s with lows Tuesday Night in the single digits and teens. Highs Wednesday will be in the teens and 20s.
15z SREF snowfall forecast for Monday Night. A widespread area of 1″ possibly 2″ amounts from southern, central, eastern, and northeastern Minnesota through western and northern Wisconsin. Source, college of dupage website.
