Scattered snow showers and flurries have been moving through the area Today as a reinforcing shot of arctic air approaches from the north. In between these snow showers, skies were partly to mostly sunny. High temperatures were in the single digits with west or northwest winds at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts.

Tonight through Wednesday Night (January 6-7)
A powerful arctic high averaging 1055-1060mb drops southeast out of western Canada, through the northern Plains, and into the central Plains during this period. Flurries and snow showers over the Northland will come to an end This Evening — the rest of this forecast period looks dry. Clear to partly cloudy skies are expected with lows Tonight in the teens and 20s below zero with a few spots up in northern Minnesota possibly dropping to around 30 below. Highs on Wednesday will be in the single digits and teens below with lows Wednesday Night ranging from the single digits to around 20 below. Winds will be out of the northwest at 10 to 25 mph Tonight; west or northwest winds Tomorrow at 10 to 25 mph; west or southwest winds Tomorrow Night at 10 to 15 mph.

Thursday through Saturday (January 8-10)
A round of snow is likely on Thursday as an area of low pressure along with a cold front push through the Northland. Looks like most of us will pick up 1″ to maybe 2″ of fresh snow on Thursday. More arctic air follows this system Thursday Night through Saturday with mainly dry conditions expected.
Highs on Thursday will be in the single digits to around 10 above with highs Friday in the single digits and teens below. Highs on Saturday will be in the single digits below to single digits above zero. Lows Thursday Night and Friday Night will be in the teens and 20s below zero.

(January 11-16)
Below average temperatures from the 11th-13th; above average temperatures from the 14th-16th. The overall pattern that will be in place will continue to favor cold temperatures across the Northland late this weekend/early next week but there continues to be fairly strong signals showing up that would support a significant warm up across the area sometime mid or late next week. The 11th-16th time frame looks pretty dry/quiet at the moment.
