Weather Summary for January 8, 2015
Location: northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin
A couple areas of low pressure moved through the region Today while a cold front pushed southeast across the Northland. The forecast verified nicely Today as the entire area saw snow with accumulations ranging from just under an inch to as much as 3-4″. The timing of this event was also spot on as most of the snow fell prior to 3 PM in Duluth and Superior — which was what I predicted 24 hours ago. So yeah, always nice to have a forecast verify. High temperatures Today were in the single digits to around 10 above. South or southwest winds shifted to the northwest at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts.
Forecast Discussion for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (January 8)
Strong pressure rises of 2-4mb/2 hours continue to move into the Upper Midwest late This Afternoon while a pocket of very impressive height falls on the order of 150-210 meters/12 hours covers the region as a vigorous clipper system and upper trough dig south/east into the Upper Midwest.
The big weather stories for Tonight will be increasing winds, blowing snow, and dangerous wind chills.
Expect northwest winds to increase to 10 to 25 mph Tonight with 30-40+ mph gusts likely. The powdery snow that fell Today will easily blow around Tonight due to these gusty winds. Flurries and light snow will continue into the early-mid Evening hours but little additional accumulation is expected. Partly to mostly cloudy skies will be found over the Northland Tonight with lows in the single digits below to around 20 below.
Friday and Friday Night (January 9)
Arctic high pressure will be in control of our weather during this period. Partly cloudy skies are forecast with highs on Friday in the single digits below to single digits above zero. Lows Friday Night will be in the teens and 20s below. Winds will be out of the northwest or west at 10 to 25 mph.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: High.
Saturday through Monday (January 10-12)
Cold temperatures will persist through this period but it does look mainly dry. High temperatures will be in the single digits on Saturday; single digits and teens on Sunday and Monday. Lows Saturday Night and Sunday Night will be in the teens and 20s below.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: High.
(January 13-18)
Below average temperatures on the 13th; after that it appears that will have normal to above normal temperatures with the greatest chance for those above normal temps coming during the 16th-18th time frame the way it looks now. Not looking at any major storms through this forecast period.
