Weather Summary for January 19, 2015
Location: northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin
The minor snow event that was forecast to hit Today never really panned out. Instead we saw mostly cloudy skies with patchy light snow and flurries. Highs were in the 20s to low 30s with winds out of the east at 5 to 15 mph.
Forecast Discussion for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (January 19)
A broad area of low pressure stretching from the northern Plains to southern Minnesota late This Afternoon won’t move much Tonight. Mostly cloudy skies will linger in our area with some flurries and light snow possible. Not looking for much in the way of snow accumulation though, maybe a half inch to an inch at most. Lows will be in the teens and 20s with single digits possible in the Arrowhead. East winds will continue at 5 to 15 mph.
Tuesday and Tuesday Night (January 20)
A few areas of low pressure will be moving SE through the northern Plains and Upper Midwest this period while a cold front sags south into northern Minnesota. A few flurries could occur Tomorrow and Tomorrow Night otherwise partly to mostly cloudy skies will rule with highs in the 20s and 30s with lows Tuesday Night in the teens and 20s. Winds on Tuesday will be out of the east or northeast at 5 to 15 mph. North or south winds are expected Tuesday Night at 5 to 15 mph.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: High.
Wednesday through Friday (January 21-23)
The storm track shifts north into central Canada from mid to late week…This should lead to more warmth over our area with the warmest day occurring on Friday the way it looks now.
High temperatures are forecast to be in the 20s and 30s on Wednesday, mainly in the 20s on Thursday, warming into the 30s on Friday. Lows Wednesday Night will range from the single digits to around 20 degrees with lows Thursday Night in the 20s.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: High.
(January 24-29)
Near to above average temperatures are expected through this period. There will be quite a bit of bitter cold arctic air building to our north next week but right now it looks like it will remain in Canada instead of surging south into the U.S.
I sound like a broken record here — but there really isn’t much snow in our forecast during the 22nd-29th time frame, possibly a minor event or two but that should be about it.
