Weather Summary for January 24, 2015
Location:  northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin

Another unseasonably warm day across the Northland with highs topping out in the mid to upper 30s -normal highs in late January are in the teens!  Partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies were common Today with patchy drizzle and snow flurries.  A cold front pushed south/west through most of the area during the Afternoon hours.  A drop in temperature and an abrupt wind shift to the east-northeast occurred as this front moved through.

Forecast Discussion for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (January 24)

High pressure will move into Ontario while low pressure moves into southern Iowa and northern Missouri.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies will occur Tonight with some light snow and flurries.  It will be colder Tonight compared to previous nights.  Lows will range from the single digits below to single digits above zero in far northern Minnesota to the teens elsewhere.  Winds will be out of the east or northeast at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts near Lake Superior.  Note:  Lake effect snow showers could develop during the night near Lake Superior as ENE winds combine with 850mb temperatures of around -8 to -12C making conditions somewhat favorable for lake effect snow shower formation, this does not look like a real good setup though for a lot of lake effect snow, but a dusting up to 2″ of snow could accumulate in some locales by daybreak.

Sunday and Sunday Night (January 25)

Low pressure moves into the Ohio Valley while high pressure tracks into eastern Canada.  Sunday is looking generally dry in our area with any lake effect snow showers near Lake Superior coming to an end by the Afternoon hours.  The next clipper system approaches from the NW Sunday Night…Light snow and flurries will move into the Northland Tomorrow Night.

Temperatures Sunday and Sunday Night will be in the teens and 20s.  East or southeast winds Tomorrow at 10 to 15 mph will turn to the south Tomorrow Night.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  Medium to High.

Monday through Wednesday (January 26-28)

A little bit of snow is possible on Monday as a weak clipper passes through the area.  Tuesday and Wednesday are looking dry.  Highs are forecast to be in the 30s from Monday through Wednesday with lows Monday Night and Tuesday Night mainly in the 20s.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  Medium to High.

(January 29-February 3)

Near normal temperatures on the 29th, after that a period of below average temperatures from the 30th-3rd.  Still not seeing any signs of a major snow event through early February, but we could be hit by a minor snow event sometime between the 29th-31st.
