February 12, 2015 Weather Report – Several shots of arctic air through next week; Blizzard potential this weekend in parts of the Northeast U.S. including Boston.

Here we go again! Another bomb for parts of the northeast, or in other words…A blizzard!  Yes, there is potential for another blizzard in parts of the northeast U.S. this weekend, and Boston seems to be in the threat zone, again.  The map below is from Today’s 12z run of the EURO ensemble model, valid for Sunday, February 15, 2015.  A wicked looking storm just off-shore from Massachusetts.  Source, tropicaltidbits.com

Here in the Northland it’s all about the cold!  The potential for a lot of snow is extremely low during the next week, and probably even longer than that…Nothing has really changed in the overall pattern, so it’s more of the same…Meaning very minor snow events, but no big storms around here.

Weather Summary for February 12, 2015
Location:  northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin

A ridge of high pressure averaging 1034mb stretches from eastern Kansas to eastern Minnesota late This Afternoon.  Clear to partly cloudy skies were common in our area Today with high temperatures mostly in the single digits.  Winds Today shifted from the north-northwest to the south/west during the Afternoon hours.

Forecast Discussion for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (February 12)

High pressure exits off to the east as low pressure moves into western Ontario.  Attached to that low will be a warm front and trough.  This system will bring a few snow showers and flurries to the Northland Tonight but accumulations should remain under an inch.  Lows will be in the single digits below to single digits above zero.  Winds will remain out of the south or southwest at 10 to 15 mph.

Friday and Friday Night (February 13)

Low pressure will dig SE out of western Ontario, moving over the eastern Great Lakes by late Friday Night.  A cold front will move through the Northland on Friday with arctic air returning by Friday Night.  A few snow showers and flurries will be possible at times during this period but accumulations will be extremely light.  Highs Tomorrow will be in the teens and 20s with lows Tomorrow Night in the single digits, teens, and 20s below zero.  Winds will shift to the west or northwest on Friday, and to the north or northwest Friday Night.  Wind speeds will range from 10-25 mph with higher gusts possible.

Note:  Lake effect snow showers are possible along the South Shore of Lake Superior from Friday Night through Saturday Evening as north/northwest winds blow across Lake Superior.  Some accumulations are likely especially in Ashland and Iron Counties.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Saturday through Monday (February 14-16)

Bitterly cold temperatures will be over the Northland on Saturday as arctic high pressure averaging 1045mb builds into the Upper Midwest.  This high moves off to the east on Sunday/Monday which will make way for a weak system approaching from the west-northwest…A light snowfall event is possible over the Northland from Sunday into Monday.

High temperatures on Saturday will range from around 10 below to the single digits above zero.  Highs on Sunday will range from the single digits below to single digits above zero.  Highs on Monday will be in the teens.  Lows Saturday Night will be in the teens, 20s, and possibly even the 30s below.  Lows Sunday Night will range from the single digits below to single digits above zero.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(February 17-22)

Below average temperatures from the 17th-22nd.  No major snow storms anytime soon.
