Weather Summary for June 8, 2015
Location:  Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

The big weather story today was the incredible amount of haze/smoke in the air thanks to wildfires which are burning in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, winds aloft are coming out of the northwest, so all of that smoke and haze has found its way into the Northland today.  The second big story was the development of spotty showers and thunderstorms today in far Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.  These storms weren’t as widespread as what occurred on Sunday, and also were a little less vigorous compared to 24 hours ago.  High temperatures today were in the 70s with near 80 degree temperatures around the Brainerd Lakes.  Winds today were out of the north or northwest at 10 to 20 mph.

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (June 8)

Spotty showers and thunderstorms are possible This Evening in the Arrowhead of Minnesota and also in Eastern portions of Northwest Wisconsin, otherwise expect partly cloudy skies Tonight with haze and smoke continuing.  Low temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s with north or northwest winds turning to the south or southwest at 5 to 15 mph.

Tuesday and Tuesday Night (June 9)

A rather strong area of low pressure will track east/southeast out of Manitoba during this period.  A warm front and cold front attached to this low will be tracking through the Northland Tomorrow and Tomorrow Night.

A fair amount of instability should develop in our area on Tuesday with CAPE of 1000-2000 j/kg with Lifted Indices of -2 to -5C.  Winds aloft will be quite strong with 40-60 knot NW mid level winds, and upper level winds of 80-110 knots.  The low level jet doesn’t look particularly strong, generally around 25-35 knots from the SW.

Lift associated with the approaching warm front and cold front combined with the unstable atmosphere, and a warm and moist airmass overhead should lead to the development of a few showers and thunderstorms in parts of the Northland from Tuesday into Tuesday Evening.  Note:  There is also a chance will see a lake breeze front develop along the North Shore of Lake Superior on Tuesday and that boundary could also serve as a focal point for some thunderstorms.  A few of the storms that develop Tomorrow and Tomorrow Evening could be strong to severe with hail and gusty winds being the primary hazards along with heavy downpours and lightning.

High temperatures on Tuesday are forecast to be in the 70s and 80s with cooler temperatures along the North Shore of Lake Superior.  Lows Tuesday Night will be in the 50s and 60s.  South or southwest winds on Tuesday at 10 to 20 mph will turn to the north or west Tuesday Night at 10 to 20 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  Medium.

Wednesday through Friday (June 10-12)

Mainly dry weather on the way for Wednesday with highs in the 70s.  Stays dry Wednesday Night with lows in the 50s.  Most of the Northland should remain dry Thursday and Friday, but low pressure and a frontal boundary to our south will cause widespread rain (possibly heavy rain) in parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, right now it looks like most of this rain will stay south of the Northland but things could change in coming days so stay tuned.

High temperatures on Thursday and Friday are expected to be in the 60s and 70s with cooler temperatures near Lake Superior.  Lows Thursday Night will be in the 50s to around 60 degrees.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  Medium.

(June 13-18)

Near to above average temperatures are expected from the 13th-18th but we could be dealing with a lake breeze at times so if that happens then it will be quite a bit cooler near Lake Superior.  A few showers or thunderstorms are possible toward the 16th-18th time frame.
