Radar rainfall estimates centered over the local Duluth and Superior area. Rain totals varied greatly with the batch of thunderstorms that moved over the city around midday today. Only 0.02″ of rain at the Duluth Airport while over a half inch of rain fell in spots below the hill in the Twin Ports. Typical summer time rainfall distribution, some spots get a lot, others only get a light amount or nothing at all.

Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

A cold front moving slowly south out of Ontario and into Northern Minnesota today combined with a few fast moving disturbances led to the development of scattered showers and thunderstorms around the Northland today. A few of the storms were on the strong side with gusty winds, small hail along with lightning and torrential downpours. Outside of the scattered rains skies were partly sunny to mostly cloudy with highs in the 70s to lower 80s with cooler temperatures near Lake Superior. Winds were variable in direction at 5 to 15 mph with a more pronounced easterly wind near Lake Superior this afternoon.

Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight through Thursday Night (June 24-25)
A cold front will push south and out of the Northland Tonight with high pressure taking over as it extends from the Northern Rockies to northeast of Lake Superior.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue in the area Tonight although the precipitation should gradually decrease in coverage and intensity during the night. Patchy fog could form Tonight into early Thursday Morning, followed by partly to mostly sunny skies. Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected for Thursday Night.
Although no frontal boundaries will be over the Northland on Thursday there will be lingering instability and moisture over the area and this combined with a lake breeze front could help to trigger a few pulse-type showers and thunderstorms for areas away from Lake Superior on Thursday and Thursday Evening.
Low temperatures Tonight will be in the 50s to lower 60s with a few spots possibly dropping into the 40s. Highs on Thursday will be in the 70s to lower 80s with cooler temperatures near Lake Superior. Lows Thursday Night will be in the 40s and 50s. Winds will be out of the north, west, or east at 5 to 15 mph.

Friday through Sunday (June 26-28)
High pressure remains in control of our weather on Friday with highs in the 70s to lower 80s but it will be cooler near Lake Superior, lows Friday Night will be in the 50s and 60s. Note: A few spotty showers and thunderstorms could develop once again on Friday in parts of the Northland as some instability and moisture remain over the area.
This weekend will see an area of low pressure, warm front, cold front, and upper level trough dig southeast into the Upper Midwest — This system could bring some showers or thunderstorms to the area at times especially from late Saturday into Sunday. High temperatures on Saturday and Sunday are expected to be in the 70s with a few spots possibly climbing into the 80s on Saturday. Lows Saturday Night will be in the 50s and 60s.

(June 29-July 4)
A few showers or thunderstorms are possible on Monday (29th) A few more showers or thunderstorms are possible sometime around July 1-2. The overall weather pattern becomes rather amplified next week with a huge heat dome to our west and a deep/cool trough in place from Central Canada through the Great Lakes region. Near to below average temperatures are forecast in the Northland from June 29-July 4, although its possible we could have a day or two during the long range that features above average temperatures.
