Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (June 27)
Low pressure which was over Eastern North Dakota late this afternoon will move southeast into Central Minnesota by daybreak. Severe thunderstorms including a number of tornadoes developed this afternoon near the surface low in Eastern North Dakota but the bulk of the heavier thunderstorms tonight will be moving south or southeast and should for the most part stay west and southwest of our area. Here in the Northland expect occasional showers and a few thunderstorms with locally heavy rain and lightning being the main hazards but a risk for gusty winds and hail is possible especially before Midnight in Western portions of the area. Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected tonight with lows in the 50s and 60s. Winds will be out of the south, east, or north at 5 to 15 mph.
Sunday and Sunday Night (June 28)
Low pressure along with an upper level trough will move slowly south/southeast through the Upper Midwest — Expect occasional showers and scattered thunderstorms in most of the Northland Tomorrow and Tomorrow Evening. Brief heavy downpours are a possibility on Sunday but not expecting any severe thunderstorms due to minimal instability that will be in place. High temperatures Tomorrow will be in the 60s and 70s with lows Tomorrow Night in the 50s to lower 60s. Winds will be out of the north, east, or south on Sunday at 10 to 15 mph with south or north winds Sunday Night at 5 to 15 mph.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: High.
Monday through Wednesday (June 29-July 1)
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible on Monday as cold air aloft combines with a disturbance and cold front which will approach from the north. Note: If we get enough instability to build-up on Monday then we could see a few strong to severe thunderstorms in parts of Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin. Mainly dry weather is expected for Tuesday and Wednesday the way it looks now.
High temperatures will be in the 70s and 80s on Monday with lows Monday Night in the 40s and 50s. Highs on Tuesday will be in the 60s and 70s with lows Tuesday Night in the 40s and 50s. Highs on Wednesday will be in the 60s and 70s.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: Low to Medium.
(July 2-7)
A few showers or thunderstorms are possible from time to time from the 2nd-7th of July, not looking for any all day rains on any one of those days though. The computer models have been and continue to struggle a bit on the temperatures with the operational GFS and EURO models from today showing quite a bit of warm air building into the Upper Midwest including here in the Northland during the 4th of July weekend and into the following week, but the EURO ensemble model from today paints a cooler scenario for the area with temperatures near to slightly below average. Stay tuned!
