A strong area of low pressure sitting north of Minnesota today will move slowly off to the east through Monday night. Gusty northwest winds and unseasonably cool temperatures along with lingering clouds and spits of drizzle/light rain will persist into Monday. A real taste of early fall like weather around here.

No tornadoes anywhere in the Plains or Upper Midwest on Saturday despite quite a few tornado watches, an enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms along with a rather large 10% area that was outlined for tornadoes from Minnesota to Iowa.

Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Deep low pressure of 998mb was over Northern Ontario late this afternoon. Strong west to southwest winds were occurring south of this low today with wind speeds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Cyclonic flow around the Ontario low led to a fairly cloudy day over the Northland with some passing showers and areas of drizzle to boot. High temperatures were only in the mid 50s to low 60s today which is well below average for late August.

Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight through Monday Night (August 23-24)
Low pressure moves slowly east through Ontario during this period. Mostly cloudy skies along with some passing showers and drizzle will remain over the Northland tonight with still a chance for a few showers on Monday before dry weather returns Monday night. Gonna be a cool one as 850mb temperatures fall to between +2 to +6C through tomorrow, a few locations up in far Northern Minnesota could even have H85 temperatures down to 0C for a time on Monday which is unseasonably cool for this time of year.
Low temperatures tonight and Monday night will be in the 40s to lower 50s with winds turning to the northwest at 15 to 25 mph. Highs on Monday will be in the 50s to lower 60s but 40s could linger all day long in far Northeast Minnesota. Lows Monday night will be in the 40s to lower 50s. Northwest winds are expected Monday and Monday night at 10 to 20 mph with occasional higher gusts.

Tuesday through Thursday (August 25-27)
Mainly dry during this period. High temperatures are forecast to be in the 50s and 60s on Tuesday with a few 70s possible in Southwest portions of the area. Lows Tuesday night will be in the 40s to low 50s. Highs on Wednesday will be in the 60s and 70s with lows Wednesday night in the 40s and 50s. Highs on Thursday will mainly be in the 70s. High pressure will control our weather Tuesday with this high moving off to the east for Wednesday and Thursday — A slow warming trend will begin by midweek.
