Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (March 1)
High pressure moves into the Upper Midwest tonight — Clear to partly cloudy skies are expected tonight with lows ranging from the single digits below to teens above zero with teens below to near 20 below zero possible in the typical cold spots. Winds will be out of the west, northwest or southwest at 5 to 15 mph.
Wednesday and Wednesday night (March 2)
Partly to mostly cloudy skies are in the forecast tomorrow. High pressure will be centered to our north/east while an area of low pressure tracks southeast out of the Northern Rockies. Most of the snow associated with that low should remain south of the Northland but there could be some flurries or light snow showers that do sneak into Western or Southern parts of the area tomorrow or tomorrow night. Highs on Wednesday will be in the teens and 20s with lows Wednesday night in the single digits to around 20 degrees. Winds will be out of the southeast or northeast at 5 to 15 mph.
Note: As winds turn to the east there will be a chance for some lake effect snow showers along the North Shore of Lake Superior especially northeast of Duluth from Wednesday PM through Thursday.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: Medium to High.
Thursday through Saturday (March 3-5)
Mainly dry on Thursday with high pressure in control of our weather. Highs on Thursday will be in the 20s and 30s with lows Thursday night ranging from the single digits to the 20s.
Snow accumulating to a few inches looks quite likely from Friday into early Saturday morning as low pressure moves southeast out of the Northern Plains — The track of this system could shift a bit between now and Friday but as of today things look pretty good for a few inches of snow in most of Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin. Temperatures on Friday will be in the 20s and 30s.
Saturday looks mostly dry at this time with highs in the 30s to around 40 degrees.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: Medium to High.
(March 6-11)
Above average temperatures are forecast during the long range. Daytime highs in the 40s and 50s are expected (Possibly even warmer in parts of the Northland) from Sunday-Tuesday (6th-8th) It will likely be somewhat cooler though early next week near Lake Superior but that’s typical for this time of year.
Looks like will get some rain at times as well next week as a few systems move out of the Rockies and into the Upper Midwest.
