Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Date:  March 19, 2016

The big weather story today was the return of the sun in the Twin Ports, seems like it’s been weeks since we’ve had as much sun as what we had today, sure was nice to see.

High pressure of 1024-1032mb extended from the Northern Plains to Ontario Province today while an upper level system over Iowa drifts toward the south.  Sky conditions varied between mostly cloudy and mostly sunny across the Northland today, most of the clouds were found along Lake Superior’s North Shore with scattered lake effect clouds affecting the Twin Ports and South Shore from time to time.  Highs today were in the 30s which is where we should be at this time of year.  Winds were out of the north or east at 5 to 15 mph with stronger gusts near Lake Superior.

Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (March 19)

Dry under a partly to mostly cloudy sky — High pressure will will move south out of the Northern Plains while the Ontario high heads into Eastern Canada.  Low temperatures will be in the teens and 20s with single digits possible in far Northern Minnesota.  Winds will shift out of the northwest at 5 to 15 mph.

Sunday and Sunday night (March 20)

A cold front north of the border tomorrow morning moves south and into the Northland by Sunday night.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected on Sunday with highs in the 30s to near 40 degrees.  Lows Sunday night will be in the teens and 20s — There is a chance for a few flurries or snow showers Sunday night in far Northeast Minnesota and along the South Shore of Lake Superior in Northwestern Wisconsin.  Winds tomorrow and tomorrow night will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  Medium.

Monday through Wednesday (March 21-23)

Dry on Monday with highs in the 30s and 40s.  A chance for light snow or a mixture of precipitation over parts of the Northland Monday night through Tuesday night with a lingering chance for some flurries or light snow on Wednesday.  Note:  No significant accumulations of snow, rain or mixed precipitation is expected at this time.

The main features of interest during the extended will be strong high pressure which builds into Ontario Province while low pressure forms over Colorado before moving out into the Central Plains by mid-week…The high to our north should feed an increasingly dry airmass into most of the Northland which will keep most of Wednesday’s snow south of our area, but prior to Wednesday there could be a few bands of light snow, rain or mixed precipitation at times with minor accumulations possible the way it looks now.

High temperatures on Tuesday will be in the 30s and 40s with 50s possible in far Southern areas.  Lows Tuesday night will be in the 20s and 30s with highs Wednesday also in the 20s and 30s.  Note:  Gusty east to northeast winds are possible near Lake Superior from Tuesday through Wednesday night, wind gusts could top 30 mph.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  Medium.

Still looking at below to near average temperatures during the long range with a chance for some snow or rain on the 25th-26th and possibly again from the 28th-29th.
