Here’s a look at today’s snow maker as it heads south/east out of the northern Plains and into the upper Midwest per Goes-16 water vapor satellite imagery from Friday, March 1, 2019.
Weather Synopsis for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
A snowy afternoon across the area thanks to a weak area of low pressure near the Minnesota-Iowa border along with a passing cold front and a mid-upper level disturbance which has been moving east out of the northern Plains. Highs today were mainly in the mid to upper teens with generally light winds.
Tonight: Snow ends before midnight followed by partly to mostly cloudy skies. It’ll be very cold Saturday morning with lows falling into the teens and 20s below zero across northern Minnesota with single digits below zero in far eastern Minnesota and most of northwest Wisconsin.
Saturday: Partly to mostly cloudy skies. Cold with highs in the single digits and teens. Winds out of the northwest at 10 to 15 mph, gusts to around 25 mph. There could be a few snow flurries or snow showers around the area during the afternoon-early evening hours but no accumulation is expected.
Note: Frigid airmass overhead this weekend with 850mb temperatures bottoming out between -25 and -30C from Saturday evening through early Monday morning. Still looking at record or near record cold high and or low temperatures across the area for Sunday and Monday.
