Cold temperatures will continue in the Northland through Friday with daytime highs in the single digits and teens Thursday, and the teens to around 20 Friday. A brief warmup occurs Saturday which will send our temperatures well into the 20s to lower 30s, but after that will see a return to colder temperatures for Sunday and possibly into Monday.

Overnight lows tonight and Thursday night will be in the teens and 20s below zero with some 30s below possible in the traditional cold spots in northern Minnesota.

Temperatures at Hibbing and International Falls may get close to their record low temperature Thursday morning.

Here’s a look at the final snowfall totals for the winter storm from February 21-23, 2022.

And a zoomed in view of snowfall totals for the Twin Ports and South Shore from February 21-23, 2022.

Here was my final updated snowfall forecast for February 21-23, 2022, which I released at around 4 AM Monday morning, with a slight revision made Monday afternoon to add that 25-35″ zone over in the Bayfield Peninsula area of northwest Wisconsin.

Overall, not too bad of a forecast compared to what actually occurred. These snowfall forecasts are never easy, there’s always going to be an area or two where snow totals end up higher than expected, or lower than expected.

Visible satellite loop of Lake Superior from today reveals a thick ice/snowpack along the South Shore of the lake after the winter storm and strong northeasterly winds over the last few days.

Here’s what it looked like at the Duluth Harbor per Duluth Canal Cam this afternoon.

A little less than 40% of Lake Superior was covered by ice as of February 22, 2022, this is a little below the average of ~45% for late February.

A pretty quiet weather pattern for us locally over the next few days, but we may see a return to a more active weather pattern after about March 4th, but that is still over a week away and we may see some changes occur in the models between now and then.

But for now, just a heads up as we may see a few systems impact the Northland again later next week and beyond.

Here’s the 20 member GEFS snowfall forecast using a 10:1 ratio ending March 11, 2022

Purple colors on the images below represent snow amounts of 6 inches or more.

Currently there are about 12/20 members showing 6 inches or more of snow in Duluth through March 11.

A big-time cold front plowed through Texas today with 24-hour temperature changes of 40 to over 50 degrees, going from the 80s and 90s Tuesday afternoon to the 30s, 40s and lower 50s Wednesday afternoon.

A lot of weather happening across the south today including an area of sleet and freezing rain (orange and pink colors) along with some thunderstorms occurring with that ice today. Nice and warm farther southeast from the icy zone today.
