A large and slow-moving storm which has been impacting the Northland over the last few days will finally begin to pull away from the area but not until late tonight. Snow showers and patchy drizzle/freezing drizzle will continue through this evening in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, but this will give way to some sunshine and milder temperatures with a lot less wind on Thursday, but this is only temporary as will see another vigorous mid-upper-level low drop SE through the area on Friday bringing some more snow and strong winds to the Northland along with much colder temperatures in its wake for the weekend.
Post winter storm analysis (March 22-23, 2022)
Observed snowfall – Note, this snowfall map is way underdone on snow amounts in the International Falls area, not sure why that is.

My final snowfall forecast issued Monday afternoon for the March 22-23, 2022, winter storm.
-Highest snow totals were found along the North Shore (especially over the tip of the Arrowhead) that was forecasted very well, the other area which saw higher snow totals was across north-central Minnesota, that was also forecasted well, but the snow amounts in that area ended up considerably higher compared to my forecast.

A look at liquid equivalent precipitation totals over the past 72 hours ending 7 AM Wednesday, March 23, 2022.

Snow showers and possibly some patchy drizzle or freezing drizzle will continue this evening in parts of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin with some lake enhanced snow showers possible near Lake Superior. Precipitation ends early Thursday morning.

Additional snowfall accumulations for tonight.

A look at the storm which is still affecting the Northland today as it lifts slowly NE into the Great Lakes per visible satellite imagery.

Goes-16 water vapor loop from Wednesday, March 23, 2022.

After a brief break from gusty winds on Thursday will see those gusty winds return in a big way on Friday as a much colder air mass pushes into the Northland.
Winds on Friday will shift to the NW with wind gusts of 30-45 mph possible in much of the Northland.

Friday’s system won’t be a big snow producer as it crosses the Northland, but it will consist of a strong mid-upper level low, and as that feature drops through the area it may help generate brief heavier snow showers on Friday.

A more substantial system could affect parts of the upper Midwest and the Northland sometime next week (~March 29-31) with snow or a wintry mix of precipitation, but like always we’re seeing major differences in computer models on how they develop and track this system, but that’s not unusual for something that is about a week away. Stay tuned!
