***FLOOD UPDATE***
Source: NWS Duluth, MN
-Flood Warning remains in effect until 4 PM Monday for portions of north-central Minnesota including Koochiching County, Lake, and St. Louis Counties. Flooding of lakes, rivers, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Several structures are flooded, and some sand bagging operations are continuing. Low-water crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable. Expect many areas of slow moving or standing water. At 3:44 PM, emergency management reported ongoing extensive flooding. Namakan and Kabetogama Lakes were at 1122.4 feet as of June 1, which is 22 inches above the peak level set in 2014. The level of Namakan Lake is expected to stabilize and possibly begin to fall by mid next week. Rainy Lake was at 1112.7 feet as of June 1, 16.5 inches above the 2014 flooding peak and only 3 inches away from the record level set in 1950. Rainy Lake is expected to rise another 10 to 11 inches over the next 7 days, breaking the 1950 record by the end of next week. A peak is unlikely before mid-June on Rainy Lake regardless of precipitation patterns. Some locations that will experience flooding include International Falls, Winton, Kabetogama, Crane Lake, Buyck, Voyageurs National Park, Rainy Lake East, Kabetogama Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness near Trout Lake, Burntside Lake, Rainy Lake West, Fall Lake, Birch Lake, Basswood Lake, western Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Ranier, Johnson Lake, Sand Point Lake and Echo Lake.
The good news at least for the next week or so is that we’re looking at below normal rainfall in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, but that’s not to say it’ll be completely dry because it likely won’t be as will be dealing with a few passing showers on Thursday and possibly again at times this weekend, but widespread heavy rainfall is unlikely at least through next Wednesday, June 8 the way it looks now.
Simulated radar forecast valid Noon Thursday to 9 PM Thursday.
