An early April storm brought a variety of weather to the Northland over the past 24 hours.

One of the more notable impacts of this storm were the very strong northeast winds near Lake Superior with a peak wind gust of 70 mph reported at the Duluth Airport Tuesday evening. These strong winds led to scattered power outages over portions of the Northland, and also led to occasional whiteout/near blizzard conditions for short periods of time Tuesday afternoon/evening when heavier snow bursts combined with the very strong winds caused considerable blowing snow especially near Lake Superior.

This storm also brought accumulating snow to parts of the Northland with some of the highest snow totals along the North Shore of Lake Superior thanks to some lake/terrain enhanced snow.

Freezing rain, freezing drizzle and sleet also accompanied this storm as a surge of warm air aloft quickly moved north into the Northland which caused the snow to change over to an icy wintry mix Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning.

A few thunderstorms with small hail also occurred in parts of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin Tuesday afternoon, and again late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning.

A strong area of low pressure lifted northeast out of east central Kansas to the Thunder Bay Canada area between 4 PM Tuesday and 4 PM Wednesday.

Here’s a look at how much precipitation fell in the Northland over the past 24 hours via MRMS data.
