A few chances for snow in the Northland this week, although none of these snow events look all that impressive for our area, but each one of them have the chance to produce light snowfall amounts on the order of about 1 to 2 inches with a few 3-inch totals possible, and there is also a chance we could see higher snowfall amounts near Lake Superior due to possible lake effect/enhanced snow this week.

The North Shore of Lake Superior has a chance for some lake effect snow Monday into Tuesday morning with winds out of the east, but the airmass doesn’t look all that cold once again which will probably limit the amount of lake effect snow that develops. The potential for some lake effect snow will shift to the South Shore of Lake Superior Tuesday as winds shift out of the north.

A major winter storm is expected to hit parts of the Central Plains including parts of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin and also southeast South Dakota and extreme southern Minnesota Monday into Tuesday as a strong area of low-pressure tracks east-northeast out of the Texas Panhandle on Monday, tracking toward the Chicago area or a little east of Chicago on Tuesday.

Heavy snow associated with this low lifting out of the Southern Plains will stay well south/southeast of the Northland Monday and Tuesday.

Duluth area: A few lake effect snow showers are possible Monday morning otherwise we should see some snow gradually develop Monday afternoon with some snow expected to continue Monday night into Tuesday.

European model radar forecast valid from 6 AM Monday to Midnight Tuesday.

Here’s my snowfall forecast for Monday into Tuesday.

2 to 3 inches of snow along the North Shore of Lake Superior and also along the South Shore from the Bayfield Peninsula and points east.

Trace to 2 inches of snow across the rest of the Northland.

Duluth area: 2 to 3 inches of snow from Monday into Tuesday.

Widespread winter weather alerts in effect in the Central Plains and Midwest over the next few days.

Widespread arctic air continues today across central and northern Canada with temperatures as cold as the -20s and -30s.

This arctic air will begin to push farther south/east this week and is expected to start affecting the Northland late this week or next weekend.
