A real mix bag of weather conditions across the Northland this afternoon with a plume of lake effect snow continuing at the southwest arm of Lake Superior impacting parts of the Twin Ports, while skies are sunny a little farther to the west and north of the Twin Ports area this afternoon. As for snowfall amounts, we’ve seen about 1 to 2 inches of snow today in Duluth and Superior with one report of over 3 inches of snow on top of Spirit Mountain.
Note: The last time Duluth had an inch or more of snow was on January 11th, and today’s snow marked only the 4th time this month with at least 0.1 inches of snow.
Also of note, the entire Northland is seeing much colder temperatures today with 1 PM temperatures ranging from the middle 10s to upper 20s.

Still seeing a plume of lake effect snow at the head of Lake Superior as of mid-afternoon but drier air is starting to push farther south over Lake Superior which should cause this area of snow to diminish by late this afternoon (~3 PM), but until then expect some more snow in parts of Duluth and Superior with brief bursts of heavier snow possible with additional snow accumulations of a trace to one inch in spots.

You can also see the dry air pushing south on visible satellite imagery this afternoon as noted by how the clouds (white on the loop below) are starting to break up from north to south over Lake Superior, and that trend should continue through late this afternoon.

There’s plenty of cold air moving over Lake Superior today with 850mb temperatures as low as -20C, and with the lake pretty much wide open because of the very warm winter (ice coverage <5%) there’s plenty of open water/source of moisture to generate lake effect snow today, and with winds out of the north/east, this lake effect snow has been hitting the Twin Ports area today.
