Update on the snow potential for Thursday evening-Friday morning.
Computer models continue to be in good agreement with Thursday’s system which will spread a swath of accumulating snow east-southeast across parts of the upper Midwest.
How far north Thursday’s snow gets is still a bit uncertain today as will probably see a pretty sharp cutoff between snow and no snow on the northern side of this system, and where that sets up is still a little uncertain right now.
Timing wise: Much of the day Thursday looks dry in the Northland with snow quickly moving into parts of the Northland Thursday evening. Snow tapers off Friday morning.
Duluth area: Snow begins Thursday night between 9 to 11 PM. Snow ends Friday morning between 7 to 9 AM the way it looks now.
Note: Wind shouldn’t be much of an issue with this late week system so we shouldn’t see very much blowing or drifting snow.
Here’s the European model simulated radar forecast valid 1 PM Thursday to 1 PM Friday.
Snow in blue colors.

System on Thursday will be pretty dynamic but will be moving through fairly quickly, but we could still see some bursts of moderate intensity snowfall due to the amount of lift that is forecast to move east-southeast through the upper Midwest Thursday night.
NAM model 500mb forecast valid 1 PM Thursday to 7 AM Friday.
Stronger lift in yellow, orange, red and purple on the map below.

I haven’t made any changes to my snowfall forecast for Thursday’s system.
- 2 to 3 inches of snow south of Duluth.
- Trace to 1 inch of snow north of Duluth.
- 1 to 2 inches of snow for Duluth.

A nice temperature gradient is likely on Thursday with temperatures in the teens and 20s in northern North Dakota into northern Minnesota to the 50s and 60s in southwest South Dakota.
