A warming trend is expected this weekend, followed by more arctic air next week; A few opportunities for snow ahead

More frigid temperatures in the Northland tonight with lows in the teens and 20s below zero, but the wind shouldn’t be as strong tonight as it was last night, and that’s due to arctic high pressure, which will be over the upper Midwest tonight.

Alaska warms up, the Northland gets very cold; that’s usually how things work out, and sure enough, we’re seeing that play out currently. Lots of cold air to the north, so we have a good supply of chilly temperatures to tap into as long as the flow aloft buckles enough to allow the cold air masses to shift south into the upper Midwest.

I keep saying that this pattern will become unique if or when we start to see more frequent significant snow events in the Northland, coupled with these frigid temperatures. We’ll see if we begin to see a snowier pattern evolve over the next few weeks, which could then open up the door for some epic cold in January.

A warming trend will commence on Friday, with temperatures rising into the upper single digits and lower teens above zero in the Northland. Even warmer temperatures are expected this weekend and early next week, with highs reaching the low to mid 30s on Sunday and Monday, while Saturday will see temperatures in the 20s and lower 30s.

Looking ahead, though, there are growing signs in the computer models for another plunge of cold, Arctic air sometime mid to late next week. Will it be as cold as this current Arctic blast? It’s too early to say right now.

We also have a few opportunities for some wintry precipitation this weekend and next week.
