Snowfall Comparison: 2023 vs 2024

While much of the Northland has experienced more snowfall this winter compared to last winter through mid-December, the snowfall totals have not been particularly impressive in most of the area.

Duluth has seen about 6 inches more snow this season through December 21 compared to last year, while International Falls has seen about 9 inches more snow during this same period.

Far northern Minnesota and Arrowhead region has experienced 75-100% of normal snowfall through December 21st, whereas the rest of the Northland has received approximately 25-50% of normal snowfall through December 21st.

Duluth: 46% of normal snowfall this season compared to 21% last season through December 21.

International Falls: 81% of normal snowfall this season compared to 42% last season through December 21st.

Here is an overview of regional snowfall and deviations from the norm for the 2024-25 snow season.

Sault Ste. Marie, MI, has been the big winner (or loser) so far this winter, with nearly 75 inches of snow, which is 36 inches above normal.

The weather forecast for this week indicates that there will not be a significant amount of snowfall in northeast Minnesota or northwest Wisconsin.

For Duluth, only 1 out of 20 GEFS model members, or 5%, forecast 2 or more inches of snow through December 29, while 16 out of 50 EPS (European ensemble) model members, or 32%, forecast 2 or more inches of snow.
