Despite the cold winter, ice coverage on Lake Superior is much lower than normal. This is clear from today’s satellite images, which show many lake effect clouds forming due to the open water available.

As of February 10, 2025, only about 13% of Lake Superior was covered in ice, while normally it would have around 35% ice coverage by this date.
