More Arctic Air Ahead; Snow chances later in the week

Today’s temperatures vary greatly: arctic air affects the northern Plains, upper Midwest, and much of Canada, with readings from 10 above to 20 below zero, while south Texas and parts of Florida enjoy temperatures in the 80s.

Hibbing, MN: -37 (record low -42 set in 1967)

International Falls, MN: -32 (record low -40 set in 1914)

Brainerd, MN: -30 (record low -38 set in 1981)

Duluth, MN: -26 (record low -33 set in 1875)

Ashland, WI: -18 (record low -35 set in 1967)

This morning, temperatures in the Northland were 25 to 35 degrees below the normal for February 12th.

Another cold weather advisory for all of northeast Minnesota and much of northwest Wisconsin from midnight tonight to 10 AM Thursday. Wind chills as low as 36 below zero are expected.

Note: At least another 8 subzero nights are expected in Duluth through the end of next week.

Lows ranging from around 10 below to 25 below are likely in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin tonight, with 30s below possible again in the typical colder spots across the area.

In the area between the cold arctic air to the north and the warm spring weather to the south, there is an active jet stream and storm track.

Snow has been falling today in the central Plains, Midwest, and central-eastern Great Lakes region.

Snowfall today has ranged from 5 to 10 inches in central and eastern Iowa and from 1 to 5 inches in central and northern Illinois to southern Wisconsin.

Today’s winter system also has a severe aspect, with tornado watches in effect for parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama into this evening.

There are two weather systems: one is moving northeast from the central Plains into the Great Lakes, while the other is approaching the western U.S. from the Pacific Ocean.
