The first 80-degree days of 2025 happened in parts of the Northland on Sunday.

On May 4th, International Falls recorded its first temperature of 80 degrees or higher this year, reaching a high of 82. Typically, the first 80-degree day occurs on May 16th, while the earliest was on April 6th in 1991.

Brainerd recorded its first 80-degree day on May 4th with a high of 82. The average date for the first 80 is May 9th, and the earliest on record was March 28th in 1946.

Today will be warm, with temperatures in the 70s and lower 80s in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. However, east winds near Lake Superior will keep temperatures in the 40s and 50s, especially within 10 to 15 miles of the lake.

Temperatures in the Northland, away from Lake Superior, will be about 15 to 20 degrees higher than normal for May 5th, like on Sunday.

It seems there will be a wind shift near Lake Superior on Tuesday, which could bring warmer temperatures into the 70s, even near Lake Superior and in the Twin Ports. The average date for the first 70-degree day in Duluth is April 28th, so reaching 70 on Tuesday (May 6th) would be about a week late but still within the usual range.

The remnants of Sunday’s lake breeze front moved about 80 to 90 miles from Duluth and reached from Grand Rapids to Aitkin to Mora to Pine City, extending east toward Shell Lake in northwest Wisconsin. This lake breeze boundary was notable; however, temperatures remained in the 70s even after the front passed, with the main change being a shift in wind direction to the NE, which was occasionally gusty.
