Duluth Sees First 70-Degree Day of 2025

We recorded the first 70-degree day of the year in Duluth today, May 5th, with a high of 71 degrees at the Airport. Last year, the first 70 occurred on May 12th, and the average date for the first 70 is April 28th.

A shift in the wind direction to the west is still anticipated on Tuesday, which is expected to raise temperatures significantly, reaching well into the 70s in Duluth, including areas near Lake Superior. There is even a possibility that temperatures could climb to 80 degrees on Tuesday afternoon.

The average date for the first 80-degree day in Duluth is May 23rd. The earliest recorded first 80-degree day was on March 28th in 1946. Last year, the first 80-degree day was on May 18th.

International Falls recorded its second day in a row with a temperature of 80 or warmer today. The average number of days in May with a temperature of 80 or warmer is 3, and the most was 16 days in 1980.

Another warm day is expected on Tuesday with temperatures in the 70s to lower 80s in the Northland. A cold front will move through without rain, shifting winds to the NE and becoming gusty Tuesday night. This cool NE wind will continue near Lake Superior on Wednesday and Thursday, with afternoon temperatures in the 40s to lower 50s, while inland temperatures will be in the 60s to around 70.

Some scattered rain and possibly some thunderstorms are in the forecast across the Northland this Friday and Friday night as a cold front moves through.

Some weather highlights for today, May 5th, show that International Falls, MN is warmer at 83 degrees than Phoenix, AZ at 69 degrees, as well as many cities in the Ohio Valley and parts of the southeast U.S.

Parts of Montana received some snow, including a report of 10 inches west of Lewiston in the last 24 hours.
