Duluth’s First 80-Degree Day of 2025: Weather Insights

Duluth experienced its first 80-degree day of the year today, Tuesday, May 6th, with a high temperature of 84 degrees. This is 25 degrees above the average for May 6th but falls short of the record high of 92 degrees, which was set in 2016.

May 23rd is the average date for Duluth’s first 80-degree day, with the earliest recorded on March 28th in 1946. Last year, the first 80 occurred on May 18th.

Duluth last hit 80 degrees or more on September 28, 2024, with a high of 82.

Temperatures in Duluth will change a lot in the coming days because of the wind direction.

A gusty northeast wind will return late tonight and last until Thursday, keeping daytime temperatures in the 40s and 50s by Lake Superior, while inland areas reach the 60s. On Friday, a southwest wind will push temperatures into the 70s and lower 80s, even by Lake Superior.

A warm early May day in much of the Northland, but cooler temperatures are starting to appear in far northern Minnesota due to a cold front this afternoon, and this front will continue moving south and east tonight.

Tonight’s cold front will be dry; however, another cold front arriving Friday afternoon may contain slightly more moisture. This could result in isolated to scattered showers and a few thunderstorms across parts of the Northland from Friday into Friday evening.

The blocking pattern persists today as part of the Omega Block, characterized by upper lows and lower 500mb heights over the Ohio Valley and central/southern Rockies, while higher 500mb heights dominate the northern Plains and upper Midwest.
