The big weather news around here is the incoming blast of arctic air set to arrive on Friday and linger through the weekend.

Temperatures at 850mb are expected to drop to around -25 to -30°C, making them some of the coldest we’ve experienced so far this season.

Low temperatures are expected to drop into the -10s and -20s on Friday and Saturday nights, with some northern spots possibly hitting the -30s, especially on Saturday night.

Highs will remain below zero on Saturday and range from about -5 to 5 degrees above zero on Sunday.

Winds will also be up this weekend, with gusts potentially reaching 15 to 25 mph, which will create dangerously low wind chill temperatures of -25 to -35 degrees.

A little light snow may fall at times in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin on Friday before arctic air moves in, but totals are expected to be minimal, around 0.5 to 1.5 inches.

Looking ahead to the next 7 days, it appears that any snow in Duluth should stay under 2 inches, based on the GEFS model, with all 20 members showing totals below that mark through next Wednesday, December 17.
