Unseasonably Cold May Night: Frost, Freeze Warnings, and Dry Pattern Ahead

Frost and freeze conditions are expected across the entire Northland on Wednesday morning, with temperatures dropping to around 29 degrees in areas under a freeze warning (dark blue on the map) and down to about 32 degrees in regions under a frost advisory (light blue on the map).

  • Hibbing, MN: 21 set in 2002
  • International Falls, MN: 22 set in 1967
  • Ashland, WI: 23 set in 1954
  • Duluth, MN: 26 set in 1986
  • Brainerd, MN: 26 set in 1929

A strong cold front for this time of year is pushing far to the south, reaching parts of the southern Plains today.

Highs in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin only reached the mid-40s to low 50s today, about 10 to 15 degrees colder than normal for May 19.

Brainerd: -1.60″
Ashland: -1.12″
International Falls: -1.06″
Duluth: -0.88″
Hibbing: -0.84″

Note: Duluth is seeing near-normal precipitation this spring, with a slight surplus of +0.11 inches, and for the year we’re up by +0.19 inches above average.

Northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin are heading into a dry spell, with mostly rain-free weather expected through Saturday morning. A few light showers might pop up over the weekend, but they should be scattered and bring only a small amount of rain.
