Today, there’s a double-barrel low-pressure system, with one low over northeast South Dakota and another over southwest Kansas. Both lows will move slowly northeast, but the Kansas low will take the lead as it lifts toward the upper Midwest, eventually absorbing the South Dakota low.

In short, the Northland will see occasional rain through Thursday, along with some fog and drizzle, and barely any sunshine.

Widespread rain totals ranging from 1 to nearly 3 inches are expected across most of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin through Thursday morning.

In the mid and upper levels, there’s a broad, strong trough that will gradually consolidate into one main upper low/trough over the upper Midwest by midweek. This system will slowly move east, exiting the Northland by Thursday.

On Tuesday, winds will blow from the north across northern Minnesota, with gusts reaching 15-30 mph. Meanwhile, lighter winds from the south or east are expected in northwest Wisconsin, far eastern Minnesota, and areas near Lake Superior.

Stronger northeast winds may briefly develop near Lake Superior, including the Twin Ports area, Tuesday night and linger into Wednesday morning. Gusts of 20–35 mph are possible, but it looks like these winds won’t stick around for long.

Plenty of warm air remains in place for early November across a large area stretching from the central Plains into the Upper Midwest. Temperatures were in the 50s across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin today, with widespread 60s and 70s farther south. Cooler air in the 30s and 40s has developed behind today’s system, but that chill won’t reach the Northland until later this week.

Dew points are still quite high, with lower 60s extending as far north as southwest Minnesota this afternoon and 50s farther to the north and east. Pretty unusual for early November.
