Latest update on tonight’s snow

A strong low-pressure system over far western Minnesota will continue moving southeast, arriving in southern Wisconsin by late tonight and reaching southern lower Michigan by early Wednesday morning.

Tonight, this system will bring accumulating snow to east-central Minnesota and parts of northwest Wisconsin, while far northern Minnesota, including the Arrowhead and parts of the North Shore, will see little to no snow.

Here’s my updated snowfall forecast for tonight’s system. Overall, I haven’t made many changes from Monday’s forecast, but I did tighten the snowfall gradients since snow will have a hard time pushing very far to the northeast this evening.

Duluth area: Expect 1 to 2 inches of snow by late tonight, with east to northeast winds gusting around 15 to 25 mph this evening before shifting to the northwest later on. Patchy blowing snow is likely tonight and into Wednesday.

Winds from the east to northeast along the North Shore and in Duluth this evening could bring a bit of lake-enhanced snowfall at the head of the lake. However, temperatures at 850mb are only about -5 to -7°C, which isn’t quite cold enough for significant lake enhancement. Ideally, those temps would be closer to -12°C or lower, but that colder air remains well to the northeast across northern Lake Superior.

By around midnight, winds will shift to the north-northwest, putting an end to any threat of lake-enhanced snow along the North Shore.

Radar loop ends 5:08 PM Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

Note: Snow is forecast to taper off in Duluth late tonight around Midnight to 2 AM.

With strong lift near the 700mb low and trough, snowfall rates of 0.5 to 1 inch per hour have developed this afternoon around the Brainerd Lakes area. This will continue into the evening, shifting slightly east before moving farther south later tonight.

So far today, the Brainerd Lakes area has seen 3 to 5 inches of snow, with about 3 inches reported in Fargo and Grand Forks.

There’s also been about 0.1 inches of ice accumulation in Jamestown and Minot, ND today.

Western South Dakota is seeing very strong wind gusts today, reaching speeds of 50 mph or more.
