Today’s Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
Strong low pressure of 998mb was centered in Central Ontario with high pressure of 1020mb in Eastern Montana. Cold front number 1 has pushed into Eastern-Southern Wisconsin as of 5 PM while cold front number 2 drops SE out of Northwestern Minnesota. Skies were partly to mostly sunny in our area Today with high temperatures ranging from the mid to upper 60s in Northern Minnesota with 70s elsewhere. Winds were out of the southwest at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts. There’s been a few showers Today around the Northland, but most spots have been dry This Afternoon.
Today’s Upper Level Analysis:
A potent upper trough with 60-90 meter 12 hour 500mb height falls continued to dig into the Upper Midwest per water vapor satellite imagery and RAP model analysis. This is quite the storm for early August with upper level winds up to 110 knots and mid level winds up to 60 knots across the Upper Midwest and Western Great Lakes. 850mb temperatures as of 5 PM ranged from +8 to +10C in Northwest Minnesota to +12 to +14C in the rest of Minnesota.

Tonight (August 4th)
The big weather story will be the cold air advection that will continue in the Northland Tonight as a secondary cold front exits our area to the south/east before Midnight. 850mb temperatures are forecast to drop to some of the coolest values we’ve seen in a few months with H85 temperatures of +4 to +8C expected by dawn. Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected with scattered showers, mainly during the Evening. Lows will be in the 40s and 50s. Winds will be out of the southwest or northwest at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts.

Sunday and Sunday Night (August 5th)
High pressure will dominate our weather this period. Partly cloudy skies are forecast with highs Tomorrow in the 60s and 70s with lows Tomorrow Night in the 40s and 50s. West or northwest winds on Sunday will turn a bit more to the southwest Sunday Night, wind speeds will be up to 20 mph.

Extended Forecast, Monday through Wednesday (August 6th-8th)
A nice warmup will occur on Monday with high temperatures getting into the 80s across our area as SW winds pick up ahead of a cold front which will move through the Northland by Monday Night. Still can’t rule out a shower or thunderstorm as that front moves comes through, but coverage of any such activity looks to be very spotty. Looks dry on Tuesday with highs in the 70s and 80s, similar high temperatures are expected for Wednesday. Lows in the 50s and 60s should prevail for Monday Night and Tuesday Night. By the middle of next week we could be dealing with a few showers or thunderstorms.
Long Range Forecast (August 9th-14th)
An upper low/trough may develop to our north/east between the 9th-12th with a northwest or N-NW 500mb flow in the Upper Midwest. A few showers or thunderstorms could occur from time to time should we see that upper low-trough take shape later next week. Temperatures are forecast to be near seasonal averages this period, but a day or two with below average temperatures is certainly possible.
