-Average U.S. temperature for October 2012: 53.9F. 0.3 degrees below the long term average. This ends a streak of 16 consecutive months with an above average temperature in the U.S. (June 2011-September 2012)
-19 states had a below average monthly temperature in October.
*Lots of blue color=below average monthly temperatures during October 2012.
*Only the Southwest U.S. and Northeast U.S. had an above average monthly temperature in October 2012.
*Below to much below normal precipitation occurred over the Central-Southern Plains in October 2012. Wetter than normal conditions for the Pacific Northwest, Northern Rockies, Northeast U.S., Ohio Valley, and the Central-Eastern Great Lakes region.
*January through October 2012 Climate Data*
-January through October 2012 was the warmest 1st ten months of any year on record in the U.S. The average temperature was 58.4F which was 3.4 degrees above the 20th century average. It beat the previous record set in 2000 by 1.1 degrees.
-The period from January-October 2012 has featured 21 states with all-time record warmth and an additional 25 states that have year-to-date temperatures among their top 10 warmest.
Note: El Nino watch has been cancelled and Enso-Neutral conditions are expected for this winter in the lower 48.
*November 2012-January 2013: 57% chance of Enso-Neutral conditions. 40% chance of an El Nino.
*December 2012-February 2013: 57% chance of Enso-Neutral conditions. 37% chance of an El Nino.
*January-March 2013: 57% chance of Enso-Neutral conditions. 31% chance of an El Nino.
