Sunday Morning weather update/Winter Storm Update number 5

*HRRR model 4am run from This Morning.  Snowfall accumulation forecast, ending at 7 PM This Evening.  This model is hinting at up to 12″ of snow from Pine City, north toward Sandstone and Hinckley with upwards of 10″ of snow for Moose Lake and Duluth by This Evening.  Note:  Match the colors to the legend at the bottom of the screen to find out how much snow you could get in the area that you live in.

*HPC’s winter weather forecast valid thru 6 PM Tonight.

4″ or greater snowfall potential with green=Moderate Risk.  Blue=Slight Risk.

*8″ or greater snowfall potential valid thru 6 PM Tonight per HPC.

All previous headlines issued by the National Weather Service in Duluth remain in effect for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.

-Winter Storm Warning until Midnight CST Tonight for the following Counties:

Pine MN-Hinckley and Pine City
Carlton MN-Moose Lake and Cloquet
Central and Southern St. Louis MN-Duluth, Floodwood, and Hibbing
Lake MN-Two Harbors, Silver Bay, and Finland
Cook MN-Lutsen and Grand Marais

Douglas WI-Superior and Solon Springs
Burnett WI-Siren and Grantsburg
Washburn WI-Spooner and Shell Lake

-Winter Storm Warning until 9 PM CST Tonight for the following Counties:

Cass MN-Walker, Leader, and Cass Lake
Southern  Itasca MN-Grand Rapids
Crow Wing MN-Brainerd
Aitkin MN-Hill City, Aitkin, and McGregor

-Winter Storm Warning until 9 AM CST Monday for the following Counties:

Bayfield WI-Port Wing, and Bayfield
Ashland WI-Butternut and Ashland
Iron WI-Hurley, Gile, and Upson
Sawyer WI-Hayward and Exeland
Price WI-Park Falls and Phillips

-Winter Weather Advisory until 6 PM CST This Evening for the following Counties:

Northern Itasca MN-Bigfork and Togo
Northern St. Louis MN-Orr, Crane Lake, and Ely.

At 9 AM CST:  Low pressure of 1012mb was in Southwest Minnesota with an arctic front over Western and Northern Minnesota.

-For Today, the surface low in Southwest Minnesota at mid-Morning will continue to move almost due east, likely hugging Interstate 90 in far Southern Minnesota.  This low will bring widespread snow to Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin through the Afternoon and early Evening hours, snow will then begin to taper off from west to east Tonight, but the snow will likely linger into Monday in parts of Northwest Wisconsin, especially along the South Shore of Lake Superior.

Hazards thru Monday Morning for the Northland include:

-Falling and blowing snow.
-Snow covered and icy roads, use extreme caution if you need to travel.
-Visibility reduced to a mile or less at times.

*Radar loop, ending around 9:30 AM This Morning.

Forecast snowfall totals thru late Tonight:

*3-8″ for much of Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.  The higher totals will likely be south/east of the Iron Range, affecting the Brainerd Lakes, I-35 corridor, all of Northwest Wisconsin, and the Twin Ports on up the North Shore of Lake Superior.

*Lighter snowfall amounts of 1-3″ are expected in the Arrowhead and Borderland areas, including International Falls, Northome, Ely, Orr, Crane Lake, and Bigfork.
