Evening winter weather update
At 6 PM CDT, low pressure of 996mb was centered in Western South Dakota with a 1002mb low over Northwest North Dakota. The main low is the one in Western South Dakota and it’s this low that’ll track into Western Minnesota by dawn Monday and then out over Western Lake Superior by Monday Evening.
Snow will begin before Midnight Tonight along and west of a line from International Falls to Brainerd. Snow will spread east-northeast after Midnight and should reach the Iron Range, Twin Ports and I35 corridor between 2-4 AM. Snow is then forecast to move into the Arrowhead, North Shore and Northwest Wisconsin after 4 AM.
There is a possibility for a 3-6 hour period of moderate to even heavy snowfall rates (Up to 1″/hour) across the Northland late Tonight and Monday Morning.
Expect southeast winds at 10-20 mph with higher gusts possible Tonight and Monday Morning. Winds will shift to the west and eventually the northwest as the low pulls away Monday Afternoon and Monday Night with winds possibly gusting over 25 mph during that time.
Some blowing and drifting snow is possible late Tonight through Monday Night, although I think the better chance for this to happen will come late Monday Afternoon through Monday Night as winds become even stronger on the backside of the surface low.
3-6″ of snow is expected between late Tonight and Monday Afternoon in Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin. Heavier amounts on the order of 6-10″ are possible in Northern Minnesota, including the Iron Range and also along the North Shore of Lake Superior from Two Harbors to Grand Marais where southeast winds may lead to some lake enhanced snowfall on Monday.
Travel conditions won’t be the best starting late Tonight and lasting into Monday Night. Roads will become snow covered and slippery, and visibilities could be reduced to a quarter mile or less at times due to either falling snow or a combination of falling and blowing snow. Use extreme caution if you have travel plans in the Northland and be sure to allow extra time to reach your destination.
