Today’s Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Skies were partly sunny to mostly cloudy Today with below average high temperatures in the 30s and 40s.  Winds were out of the north, west or south at 5 to 15 mph.

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Short Term – Confidence:  Medium.

Tonight (April 7th)

A new disturbance will move east out of the Northern Plains and will move across the Upper Midwest Tonight.  A warm and moist advection pattern will take place ahead of this feature and this will help to produce a variety of precipitation types over the Northland.  Temperatures are marginal and a degree either way will make a difference between getting snow or rain.  Lows will be in the upper 20s to mid 30s with south, east or north winds at 5 to 15 mph.  Expect areas of snow and rain Tonight with patchy freezing rain also possible.

Monday and Monday Night (April 8th)

Lingering rain or snow is possible Tomorrow Morning as Tonight’s system pulls off to our east by Monday Afternoon.  Behind this feature it looks generally dry for Monday Afternoon into Monday Night.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies are forecast this period with highs Tomorrow in the 30s and 40s.  Lows Tomorrow Night in the 20s to lower 30s.  Winds will be out of the north at 10 to 20 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  Low.

Tuesday through Thursday (April 9th-11th)

A deep trough of low pressure will move out of the Southwest U.S. and into the Central Plains for Tuesday and Wednesday, this trough will then reach the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and Ohio Valley later this week.  A few areas of low pressure are forecast to eject NE out of this trough with each one of these lows passing well south/east of the Northland.

It remains to be seen if will get any precipitation during this period, it’s quite possible that most of our area will stay dry as the bulk of the precip sets up farther to our south.  The NAM continues to offer the most extreme/wettest solution for our area and would give us a significant snowstorm Tuesday into Wednesday, there really isn’t any support from the other models, so the NAM is most certainly the odd model out.

Highs will stay below average with 30s and low 40s during this period.  Lows will be in the teens and 20s.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  Medium.

(April 12th-16th)

Below average temperatures are forecast to continue through this period.  Looking dry this Friday/Saturday (12th-13)  A new storm may affect the area between the 14th-16 with additional snow or rain.
