Weather Tidbits for Duluth, Minnesota:

-After last night’s snow event, the spring snowfall total (Since March 1) is at 32.3″.  The average for the entire spring (March-May) is 20.5″.

-The seasonal snowfall total is at 85.1″, just 1.0″ shy of the average of 86.1″.

-Were closing in on a 100″ snow season.  An additional 14.9″ of snow is needed to reach that mark.  I’m not saying we will get to 100″, but if we do it would be quite amazing considering up until now we haven’t had 1 major snowstorm.

Today’s Weather Summary for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Mostly cloudy skies throughout the Northland with temperatures in the 30s and 40s, yes still below average for this time of year.  Winds were from the north or east at 5 to 15 mph.

Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Short Term – Confidence:  Medium.

Tonight (April 8th)

A frontal boundary draped from Western Nebraska to the Wisconsin/Illinois border will sag a bit to the south Tonight while high pressure of around 1034mb remains over Western Canada with strong low pressure of 984-990mb over the Central-Southern Rockies.  Looks mainly dry in our area Tonight with partly to mostly cloudy skies.  A wide range in low temperatures will occur with single digits and teens in far Northern Minnesota and the 20s and 30s in Eastern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.  Winds will be out of the north at 5 to 15 mph.

Tuesday and Tuesday Night (April 9th)

Same setup as to Tonight with a front well to our south, high pressure to our northwest, and low pressure pulling out into the Southern-Central Plains.  Some precipitation in the form of rain, snow and maybe some freezing rain is possible during this period in Southern parts of our area, generally from Brainerd to Hinckley and Pine City, east to Siren, Spooner, Winter and Park Falls.  It’s possible that a winter weather headline could be issued for those areas with the potential for a couple inches of snow along with a light accumulation of ice.  Dry conditions should prevail in far Northwest Wisconsin through the Twin Ports, Iron Range, North Shore and Arrowhead as high pressure to our northwest sends lots of dry air down into our area which should eat away at the precipitation as it tries to move north.  Highs on Tuesday will be in the 30s and 40s with lows Tuesday Night in the teens and 20s with single digits possible in far Northern Minnesota.  North or east winds are expected at 10 to 20 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  Medium.

Wednesday through Friday (April 10th-12th)

Some more snow is possible at times from Wednesday into Thursday mainly affecting the Southern part of our area.  There could be some additional accumulations along and south of a Brainerd to Hinckley to Hayward to Park Falls line.  I’m thinking that it will stay dry north of that line through Thursday.  Just too much dry air advecting south out of Canada and this should keep the precip/snow shield from making it any farther north than Central-Eastern Minnesota.

The entire area should be dry on Friday as low pressure and an upper level trough finally exits into Canada and the Eastern U.S. later this week.  High temperatures will be mainly in the 30s Wednesday-Friday with lows Wednesday Night and Thursday Night in the teens and 20s.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  Medium.

(April 13th-17th)

Saturday (13th) continues to look dry in the Northland.  Changes occur from the 14th-17th as the chances for snow or rain make a return as one or two storm systems track east out of the Western U.S.  Still no signs of spring as temperatures remain below seasonal averages.
