Forecast Discussion for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (December 28)

Arctic air moves in Tonight as low pressure heads into Central Wisconsin This Evening and into Northern Michigan by daybreak.  Light snow and flurries will be widespread before Midnight and will then diminish from NW-SE Overnight.

Heavier lake effect snow is expected along the South Shore of Lake Superior by late This Evening as winds shift to the north and 850mb temperatures fall to between -12 and -16C.

Expect hazardous driving conditions throughout the Northland Tonight with possible snow/ice covered roads.  Be prepared for falling temperatures and dangerous wind chills later Tonight.  Visibilities could be limited at times due to falling/blowing snow.

Low temperatures will range from the single digits, teens, and 20s below across Northern/Eastern Minnesota to the single digits below to single digits above zero in Northwest Wisconsin.  Winds will shift to the north/northwest Tonight at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts possible.

Expect wind chill values to fall into the 30 below to 50 below range later Tonight in Northern Minnesota and from 15 below to 35 below in Northwest Wisconsin.

Sunday and Sunday Night (December 29)

High pressure builds into the Northern Plains while arctic air tightens it’s grip on the Northland.  Highs will only be in the single digits and teens below with lows in the teens, 20s, and 30s below zero.  Partly cloudy skies are expected with lake effect snow possible along the South Shore of Lake Superior.  Winds will be out of the northwest or west at 5 to 15 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Monday through Wednesday (December 30-January 1)

A few snow showers or flurries might clip the Western/Southern portion of the Northland on Monday thanks to a weak system dropping S-SE out of the Northern Plains.  Otherwise this period looks generally dry as the Polar Vortex sets up to our north/northeast in Ontario and over Hudson Bay.  High temperatures from Monday through Wednesday will range from around 10 below to the single digits above zero.  Low temps Monday Night and Tuesday Night will range from the teens, 20s, to the 30s below.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(January 2-7)

Below average temperatures should continue through this period.  There is a potential for some snow late next week —  around the 3rd-4th.  Might be another system toward the 6th-7th per long range computer models with both the GFS and EURO showing a pretty significant snow event affecting parts of the Upper Midwest.  Stay tuned!
