Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
High pressure of 1032mb was over Western Minnesota This Afternoon with a cold airmass still in place over our area, although we continue to see a slow moderation from day to day. Sunshine was abundant Today with highs in the single digits below to single digits above zero. Winds were out of the northwest or southwest at around 5 to 15 mph.

Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (January 8)
Mostly clear skies and light winds will occur Tonight as high pressure passes through the region. Lows will bottom out in the teens, 20s, and 30s below.
Thursday and Thursday Night (January 9)
A disturbance passing north of the area combined with some warm air advection will lead to a few flurries or snow showers mainly over Northern Minnesota. Little if any accumulation is expected though. Partly to mostly cloudy skies are forecast this period with highs mainly in the teens. Lows Tomorrow Night will be in the single digits and teens above zero, yes that’s right lows Thursday Night will stay above zero! Winds during this period will be out of the south at 5 to 15 mph.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: High.
Friday through Sunday (January 10-12)
Low pressure lifts northeast out of the Southern/Central Plains on Friday. This system will bring snow and a mixture of precipitation to parts of Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Southern Minnesota, and Upper Michigan from Friday into Saturday Morning.
Note: It still appears that this storm will track too far to our southeast to bring any significant precipitation to most of the Northland, although the Southeast part of Northwest Wisconsin could get some snow with a couple inches of accumulation possible generally along south/east of a line from Birchwood to Hurley.
Another storm will take the northern route on Sunday as strong low pressure tracks across Ontario. A few snow or mixed showers are possible south of this system across Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin but this shouldn’t be a very big deal.
High temperatures from Friday through Sunday will be in the 20s and 30s with lows in the single digits and teens Friday Night and Saturday Night.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: High.
(January 13-18)
Several storms pass north of our area through this period, this means that most of the snow with those systems will stay north of the border with just minor light snowfall/flurry events expected here in the Northland. Near to above average temperatures are expected from the 13th-16th with temperatures possibly going below average once again on the 17th-18th.
