*Surface map valid for Friday Evening, January 10, 2014.  Deepening low pressure (L on the map) is expected to be over South Central Iowa Tomorrow Evening with a swath of snow extending from Central Iowa to Central Wisconsin to Upper Michigan…Some of that snow could be on the heavy side Tomorrow Night.  The orange color indicates possible freezing rain and sleet.  Green color is rain.  Areas from Southern to Eastern and Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin may also get some light snow Tomorrow Evening/Overnight due to that trough (Hatched brown line on the map) that moves east out of Western Minnesota.  (Source, Weather Prediction Center/NDFD)

Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

Temperatures continue their upward trend Today as we finally get out of the arctic air which was over the Northland during the past few days.  Warm air advection with a 40 knot low level jet from the southwest helped to warm temperatures into the teens to around 20 degrees Today with the only chilly spot remaining over far Northeast Minnesota where single digits were common Today, there’s also been some snow over the Arrowhead of Minnesota Today with mainly dry conditions elsewhere.  Winds were out of the south or southwest at 10 to 20 mph and skies varied between partly sunny and mostly cloudy.

Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (January 9)

Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected to continue with lows ranging from around zero to the low teens. Southerly winds will continue at 5 to 15 mph.  There could be some light snow and flurries Tonight  in far Northeast Minnesota with accumulations of 1-4″ possible.

Friday and Friday Night (January 10)

We warm up even more Tomorrow with highs getting into the 20s and lower 30s under partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies.  Friday Night will feature an area of low pressure lifting rapidly to the northeast out of the Central Plains.  This low should reach the Southern/Eastern portion of Wisconsin by daybreak Saturday.

A significant band of snow with 4″+ accumulations should setup over Central/Northeast Wisconsin Friday Night with some flurries and a little light snow possible here in the Northland thanks to a weaker disturbance that’ll move in from the west-northwest.  Note:  Snowfall amounts in our area should only be in the TRACE to 2″ range with the Southeast part of Northwest Wisconsin including the cities of Park Falls, Phillips, Fifield areas having the greatest chance at getting 1-2″ of snow Tomorrow Night.  There is also a chance for some patchy light freezing drizzle across our area Tomorrow Night so beware of that if you do have travel plans.

Mostly cloudy skies can be expected Tomorrow Night with lows in the single digits to around 20 degrees. Winds on Friday will be out of the south at 10 to 20 mph.  Winds Friday Night will be out of the southwest or northwest at 10 to 15 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Saturday through Monday (January 11-13)

Mild temperatures will continue this weekend with highs in the 20s to around 30 on Saturday and in the 30s on Sunday.  Lows Saturday Night and Sunday Night will mainly be in the teens.  Looks mainly dry on Saturday.  A strong area of low pressure averaging 980mb passes north of the border on Sunday.  This system could bring a few snow and or mixed showers to the Northland on Sunday but this doesn’t look like it’ll be a very big deal.  Another clipper system moves into the Upper Midwest Monday Night, this one may pack a little more punch as it could bring some accumulating snow to Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin on Monday Night the way it looks now.  High temperatures on Monday will be in the teens and 20s.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(January 14-19)

Weather pattern remains the same during this period as we stay under a northwest flow aloft, this reduces any chance for a significant winter storm in the Upper Midwest, instead will see a few potent clipper systems pass north/east of the Northland, each one of these clipper systems will bring some snow showers and flurries with minor accumulations with fluctuating temperatures along with periods of gusty winds.  I’m expecting near average temperatures on the 14th.  Near to above average temperatures on the 15th.  Then near to below average temperatures once again from the 16th-19th.
