Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (January 13)
Low pressure will move from Western North Dakota early This Evening toward Northeast Iowa by dawn. The majority of the snow associated with this system should remain west/south of the Northland…But some light snow will likely affect an area along and south of a line from around Backus to Phillips from mid-late Evening and during the Overnight hours. Snowfall accumulations in that area will range from a dusting to as much as 2″. Northern Minnesota and far Northern Wisconsin should remain dry Tonight under partly to mostly cloudy skies. Lows will range from the single digits below to around 10 below in far Northern Minnesota with teens to around 20 degrees common from Eastern Minnesota into Northwest Wisconsin. West or northwest winds early This Evening will shift to the north during the night at 5 to 15 mph.
Tuesday and Tuesday Night (January 14)
Low pressure will track through Southern Wisconsin and into lower Michigan on Tuesday. Flurries and snow showers are possible Tomorrow Morning in Eastern Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin otherwise this period looks dry under partly to mostly cloudy skies. Highs will range from the single digits to around 20 with lows in the single digits and teens below to single digits above zero. Winds will be out of the north or northwest at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts possible Tomorrow.
Note: There is a chance for some lake effect snow on Tuesday along the South Shore of Lake Superior from Bayfield County east to Iron County. Snow accumulations of 1-3″ will be possible in that area.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: High.
Wednesday through Friday (January 15-17)
A strong area of low pressure is forecast to track south/east out of Manitoba on Wednesday, this system is expected to pass north/east of the Northland on Thursday and is forecast to move toward the Central-Eastern Great Lakes region on Friday.
Periods of snow begin Wednesday Afternoon or Evening and will continue into Thursday with lingering flurries from Thursday Night through Friday. Note: This shouldn’t be a huge snow event, but a widespread 1-2″ snowfall is expected with 2-4″+ a possibility in far Northern Minnesota and also along the South Shore of Lake Superior where lake effect snow could increase from late Thursday into Friday.
Another element from this mid week storm will be the wind. SW winds on Wednesday will shift to the NW and N Thursday and Friday. Wind gusts could exceed 20-25 mph from mid to late week and this may lead to some blowing snow issues especially in open areas.
High temperatures on Wednesday will be in the teens and 20s with near steady temperatures Wednesday Night. Highs on Thursday will start out in the 20s to around 30 degrees with falling temperatures from NW-SE. Lows Thursday Night will be in the teens below to single digits above zero. Highs on Friday will be in the single digits below to around 10 above.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: High.
(January 18-23)
A northwest flow aloft continues during this period. A weak system could affect the Upper Midwest every now and then bringing with it a dusting of snow, but the overall pattern is not favorable for a significant snow event anytime soon. Near to below average temperatures are expected through this period.
