Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
A strong area of low pressure averaging 992mb was centered over Central Upper Michigan late This Afternoon with high pressure of 1036mb over Southern Alberta. A fairly decent snow event affected the Southern part of the Northland last night/early This Morning (farther north than expected) with accumulations generally in the 3-6″ range. Some spots along the North Shore of Lake Superior also picked up a fairly decent amount of snow This Morning (3-4″+) The rest of us had accumulations generally less than 2″.
Strong 2-hour pressure rises of 3-6mb and very impressive 12-hour height falls ranging from 120-240 meters covered the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest This Afternoon which is signaling the approach of the next blast of arctic air.
Mostly cloudy skies were found in our area Today with snow showers and flurries. Temperatures were in the single digits below to single digits above zero. Winds were out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph with gusts of 30 to 40 mph. The gusty winds have led to some blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility This Afternoon.
Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight through Tuesday (January 26-28)
Here we go again…
A dangerously cold airmass moves in Tonight and will remain over the Northland through Tuesday. 850mb temperatures will drop into the -28 to -35C range during the next 24 hours while thickness values remain under 5100 decameters through Tuesday Afternoon, both of those are clues that this will be an extreme blast of cold air.
Low temperatures Tonight will be in the single digits, teens, and 20s below. Lows Monday Night and Tuesday Night will be in the teens, 20s, and 30s below.
High temperatures on Monday will range from 5 below to around 15 below. Highs on Tuesday will range from around 10 below to 5 above.
Northwest winds will blow at 10 to 20 mph through Tuesday with wind gusts of 25 to 40 mph, the strongest winds will likely occur Tonight. Areas of blowing and drifting snow will continue through the night with reduced visibility especially in open areas.
The combination of bitter cold temperatures and gusty winds will cause wind chill values to drop to life-threatening levels beginning later Tonight and continuing through early Tuesday Afternoon. Feels like temperatures of 40 below to 60 below zero are expected over the entire Northland from late Tonight through early Tuesday Afternoon.
Snow showers and flurries will end Tonight, and then expect generally dry weather to hold through Tuesday as high pressure sets up shop across the Northern Plains.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: High.
Wednesday and Thursday (January 29-30)
Temperatures will moderate a bit on Wednesday with another shot of cold air moving in on Thursday. Low pressure is forecast to pass north of our area during the middle of the week with possible flurries/snow showers occurring from Wednesday PM-Thursday.
Highs on Wednesday will be in the teens and 20s. Highs on Thursday fall back into the single digits below to single digits above zero. Lows Wednesday Night will range from around 10 below to 10 above.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: High.
(January 31-February 5)
Below average temperatures keep on keeping on. Looks pretty dry around here as well so the clipper parade appears to be shutting down. Now just cold and dry. Welcome to the dark days of winter, but at least the days are getting longer.
