Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

Low pressure of 998mb has moved into far Northern Wisconsin as of 4 PM.  This clipper storm brought widespread snow to the Northland Today with amounts ranging from around 1″ in southwest areas to as much as 4-6″ elsewhere.  High temperatures Today were in the teens and 20s with winds out of the east, south, or northwest at 10 to 25 mph.

Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (February 13)

Low pressure will move into the Central/Eastern Great Lakes Tonight with very cold air moving over the Northland behind this system.  Low temperatures will range from the single digits below to around 20 below with north or west winds at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts.  Areas of blowing snow is possible especially before Midnight.  Light snow and flurries should come to an end This Evening but heavier lake effect snow showers may affect Bayfield, Ashland, and Iron Counties in Northwest Wisconsin where a winter weather advisory is in effect until 10 PM Tonight.  Additional snowfall amounts of 1-4″ are possible in the advisory area.

Friday and Friday Night (February 14)

Quieter weather conditions are on tap this period under partly cloudy skies.  Highs will be in the teens with lows ranging from the teens below to single digits above zero.  Northwest winds Tomorrow will become south or southeast Tomorrow Night.  Wind speeds will range from 5 to around 15 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Saturday through Monday (February 15-17)

An area of low pressure is forecast to drop south/southeast out of the Northern Plains on Saturday while high pressure sets up to our north.  This system could bring a little bit of snow to the Northland on Saturday although it still looks like the heavier snow would remain to our south.  East winds will also develop Saturday into Sunday AM which could result in some lake effect snow near Lake Superior but the amount of ice that covers the lake should prevent much if any lake effect from developing.

The next system that will affect the Northland arrives Sunday Night into Monday with another round of snow looking likely at that time.  Might even see a mixture of winter precipitation especially over Southern parts of the area.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(February 18-23)

Next Tuesday and Wednesday (18th-19th) look mainly dry at this time.  The period from the 20th-23rd could turn pretty active and will be a time frame to monitor in coming days.  Still looks like will see a trough to our west and a ridge over the South/East U.S. with a SW flow across the Plains and Great Lakes.  This pattern if it does develop would be favorable for a stronger storm or two to come out of the Rockies or Plains.  The track, timing, intensity of any storm plus the type of precipitation we may get will probably change on a daily basis at least for the next 3 days since it’s so far down the road.  Stay tuned.  Near to above average temperatures are expected through this period.
