Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Low pressure (1002-1004mb) stretched from Southern Saskatchewan through the Northern Plains to Central Missouri as of 3 PM Today with high pressure of 1024mb over Northern Ontario. This storm brought widespread precipitation to the Northland Today. Most locations started off with rain early This Morning but as temperatures cooled the rain mixed with and changed over to snow with bands of very heavy snow affecting portions of Northeast Minnesota This Afternoon. 850mb temperatures late This Afternoon were in the 0 to -2C range with 925mb temperatures hovering right around 0C. High temperatures Today were only in the 30s with east or northeast winds at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts.
Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin
Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (April 24)
Low pressure will continue to lift north/east into the Western Great Lakes region Tonight. This system will bring snow or rain to the area This Evening with snow continuing through the night especially over the Iron Range, Borderland, Arrowhead, and North Shore region. Some of the snow could be heavy at times in Northeast Minnesota. Low temperatures will mainly be in the 30s with winds out of the east, northeast, or northwest at 10 to 20 mph.
Friday and Friday Night (April 25)
Snow showers and flurries will continue Friday Morning over Northeast Minnesota with dry weather elsewhere. The entire Northland will be dry Tomorrow Night. Highs will range from the 40s and maybe some 50s in Western-Southern areas with 30s over the Arrowhead. Winds will be out of the northwest on Friday at 10 to 20 mph. Winds will shift to the northeast Friday Night at 5 to 15 mph.
Extended Forecast – Confidence: High.
Saturday through Monday (April 26-28)
A powerful spring storm will track out of the Rockies and into the Central Plains through this period while a massive area of high pressure sets up to our north over Ontario and Hudson Bay. The pressure difference between the low to our south and high off to our north will lead to gusty easterly winds especially near Lake Superior this weekend into early next week. It’s certainly possible that we see wind gusts over 35-40 mph near the big lake especially on Sunday and Monday.
Whether or not we get any precipitation is in doubt since the high over Ontario will be sending lots of dry air into our area so as precipitation attempts to move into the Northland the dry air in place should erode it, however, with that said the computer models do show some precipitation moving into the region late this weekend-early next week. If precipitation does occur it should be in the form of rain, but near Lake Superior freezing rain could develop due to the brisk and chilly onshore flow off Lake Superior.
High temperatures will be in the 30s and 40s from Saturday through Monday with the mildest readings found well inland from Lake Superior. Low temperatures Saturday Night and Sunday Night will be in the 20s and 30s.
Long Range Forecast – Confidence: High.
(April 29-May 4)
A very blocked up weather pattern will prevail from April 29th-May 2nd as a vigorous surface and upper level low pressure system tracks slowly northeast from the Central Plains to the Great Lakes. Some rain could occur at times in Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin from April 29-May 2 with some mixed precipitation even possible especially near Lake Superior. Below average temperatures are forecast through this period.
