Today’s Weather Summary for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

A few flurries and snow showers occurred This Morning around the Twin Ports, otherwise the Northland stayed dry Today under partly to mostly sunny skies.  High temperatures ranged from the 30s near Lake Superior to the 40s and 50s elsewhere.  Winds were out of the east at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts near Lake Superior.

Forecast Discussion for NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (April 26)

Deep low pressure averaging 985-990mb will move out of the Rockies and into the Western High Plains by dawn.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies will be found in our area Tonight with the possibility for some light rain over Southern parts of the Northland.  Low temperatures will be in the 20s and 30s with east winds at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts near Lake Superior.

Sunday and Sunday Night (April 27)

A powerful area of low pressure averaging 980-984mb will move slowly through Nebraska during this period with high pressure of >1040mb covering Ontario and Hudson Bay.  Strong east winds will occur due to the pressure difference between the low and high.  Expect wind speeds of 15 to 25 mph this period with gusts of 30-40+ mph likely developing near Lake Superior.

Precipitation will also attempt to push north into our area but it remains to be seen as to how far north the precipitation will get, and how heavy will it be.

Locations near Lake Superior, especially from the Twin Ports and North Shore as well as higher terrain areas adjacent to Lake Superior could see a mix bag of precipitation types ranging from snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain.

Precipitation that falls elsewhere should stay as rain.  Note:  Far Northern Minnesota through the Arrowhead should remain dry Tomorrow and Tomorrow Night.

High temperatures will be in the 30s and 40s with the coolest temperatures near Lake Superior.  Lows Sunday Night will be in the 20s and 30s.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Monday through Wednesday (April 28-30)

Little change in the weather pattern during this period with a strong surface and upper level low and an upper level trough covering the Plains, Upper Midwest, and Great Lakes while an upper level ridge covers Ontario and Hudson Bay.  Expect rounds of precipitation to affect most of the Northland from Monday-Wednesday. Temperatures could remain cold enough to produce snow, sleet, or freezing rain at times especially near Lake Superior.

Note:  There is a potential for a significant amount of ice and or snow accumulation with this storm over Northeast Minnesota – mainly for areas that are near Lake Superior.  Winter weather headlines could be issued by Sunday.  Stay tuned.

High temperatures will be in the 30s and 40s from Monday through Wednesday with lows Monday Night and Tuesday Night in the 20s and 30s.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(May 1-6)

Showers of rain or snow could linger into Thursday (May 1st) as a slow moving area of low pressure continues it’s slow shift north through the Great Lakes and East Central Canada.  Could see another system take aim at the Northland sometime during the 4th-6th with rain or possibly even some snow during that time.  Below average temperatures are forecast through this period.

Ventured down to Park Point (Southwestern shore of Lake Superior) Today.  Still looks impressive with a lot of ice still covering Lake Superior here in late April.  Mountains of ice piles down on Park Point, and the ice will probably get packed in even more during the next couple of days as very strong ENE winds develop. There were also some lake effect snow showers moving onshore This Morning.  Note the whitish appearance (streaks in the sky) in photo number 3.
