Location:  NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin

The 2014-15 snow season has begun!  A powerful area of low pressure averaging 984mb was over east central Ontario late This Afternoon while a strong upper level low covered eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.  Afternoon 850mb temperatures ranged from 0 to -4C across the Northland with temperatures only in the mid 30s to low 40s.  Winds were out of the west at 10-20 mph with higher gusts.  Light rain and drizzle has been common Today and with the colder temperatures and lowering thickness values, the rain did mix with and even changed over to snow in some parts of the area with a dusting to half inch of slushy accumulation reported in the Cloquet and Moose Lake areas This Afternoon.

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (October 3)

Low pressure will sit and spin over Ontario while an upper level low moves over the Central/Eastern Great Lakes.  Light rain, drizzle, and snow will be found over the Northland Tonight with a few locations possibly picking up a half inch to 1″ or so of snow accumulation.  Lows will mainly be in the 30s with west or northwest winds at 10 to 25 mph.

Saturday and Saturday Night (October 4)

Deep low pressure continues to spin over Ontario this period.  Cyclonic flow around this storm will keep our area generally overcast with some drizzle and light snow showers possible at times.  Highs Tomorrow will be in the 30s and 40s with lows Tomorrow Night in the 20s and 30s.  Northwest or west winds are expected at 10 to 25 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Sunday through Tuesday (October 5-7)

Might squeeze out a dry day on Sunday before more chances for rain showers arrive for Monday and Tuesday.  Weather pattern remains virtually the same with low pressure sitting to our north across Manitoba and Ontario while a NW flow covers the Upper Midwest.  High temperatures from Sunday through Tuesday will be in the 40s to low 50s with low temperatures Saturday Night and Sunday Night in the 20s and 30s.

Below average temperatures should continue during this period with a few showers possible from time to time.
