One across the northern Rockies/northern Plains, the other develops over the southern Plains before moving northeast into the eastern Great Lakes.

Location: Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
The cold front and disturbance which brought a coating to an inch of snow to parts of the Northland earlier Today has pushed well to our south/east late This Afternoon with skies ranging from mostly sunny in northern Minnesota to mostly cloudy in southern parts of northwest Wisconsin. Highs Today were at or a little above average with highs in the teens and 20s but colder air is moving back into far northern Minnesota where late day temperatures had fallen into the single digits. Winds Today were out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph.

Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (January 1)
An area of high pressure will pass through the Upper Midwest Tonight. Clear to partly cloudy skies are forecast with lows in the single digits and teens below to single digits above zero, a few of the typical cold spots might even drop into the 20s below. Winds will remain out of the northwest at 5 to 15 mph.
Friday and Friday Night (January 2)
High pressure moves off to the southeast while low pressure moves into the northern Plains. The cold front which moved through the area Today heads back north as a warm front on Friday.
Light snow or flurries are possible Tomorrow in north central Minnesota but with little or no accumulation. Snow is expected to become heavier across northern portions of Minnesota Friday Night with a lesser chance for flurries or some light snow in east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.
Highs Tomorrow will be in the teens and 20s with lows Friday Night mainly in the teens. Winds during this period will be out of the south or east at 10 to 20 mph.

Saturday through Monday (January 3-5)
There is a chance for significant snowfall in far northern Minnesota on Saturday as an area of low pressure tracks east/southeast out of the northern Plains. Another system is expected to lift northeast out of the southern Plains on Saturday — this one could bring a separate area of significant snow to far southern areas in northwest Wisconsin. In between these two areas, expect a little bit of snow from Saturday into Saturday Night.
Low pressure lifts into eastern Canada on Sunday making way for a massive dump of arctic air which settles into the Northland Sunday and Monday. The weather looks mainly dry from Sunday into Monday except along the South Shore of Lake Superior where a few lake effect snow showers are possible mainly over Ashland and Iron Counties.
Highs on Saturday will be in the teens and 20s. Highs on Sunday and Monday will only be in the single digits and teens below zero.
Lows Saturday Night ranging from the 20s below in northern Minnesota to single digits below zero in northwest Wisconsin. Lows Sunday Night will be in the teens and 20s below, maybe even some 30s below in the traditional cold spots in northern Minnesota.
Wind chill temperatures will likely fall into the 30 below to 45 below range across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin on Sunday and Monday.
