Still keeping an eye on a clipper this weekend.  If it tracks just right, then we could see about 1-2″, maybe up to 3″ of snow Saturday Night/Sunday.  The computer models have trended slightly more to the north with this system compared to 24 hours ago, but with it still being a few days away the track could shift further south again.  Stay tuned!  The blue outline area on this map is where the best potential at a few inches of snow would be based on Today’s track.

Weather Summary for January 21, 2015
Location:  northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin

High pressure of 1028mb covered the northern Plains Today.  Not much change in our weather as skies remained overcast with patchy freezing drizzle along with scattered snow showers and flurries.  Highs ranged from the upper teens to the upper 20s.  Winds were out of the northwest at generally 5-15 mph.

Forecast Discussion for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (January 21)

For the most part skies stay mostly cloudy Today but we could see some clearing in a few areas later in the night.  A risk for flurries and patchy freezing drizzle also lingers Tonight.  Lows will be in the single digits and teens as winds shift from the northwest to the southwest toward daybreak.

Thursday and Thursday Night (January 22)

An area of low pressure will move into western Ontario by late Tomorrow Night.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies are forecast this period with temperatures mainly in the 20s.  Southwest winds will lock in at 10 to 20 mph.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  Medium to High.

Friday through Sunday (January 23-25)

Low pressure passes through Ontario on Friday while a trough swings through the Upper Midwest.  There is a chance for some light snow, rain, sleet, and freezing rain over parts of the Northland Friday Morning through early Afternoon but this doesn’t look like a real big deal at the moment.

We dry out Friday Evening through most of Saturday, and then a clipper drops southeast out of northern Alberta late this weekend…This system could bring some accumulating snow to parts of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin during the Saturday Night-Sunday time frame.  Note:  Still seeing differences in the track of this system so whether or not the main snow band sets up west or south of us or right over the Northland remains to be seen.  Snow accumulations under the main snow band could be in the 1-2″, possibly up to 3″ range Saturday Night and Sunday.

Highs on Friday will mainly be in the 30s with lows Friday Night in the 20s.  Highs on Saturday will be in the 20s and 30s with lows Saturday Night in the teens and 20s with single digits possible in far northeast Minnesota.  Highs on Sunday will be in the 20s.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(January 26-31)

The 26th-31st looks similar to what we’ve seen most of this winter — Potential for a minor snow event around the 26th-27th time frame otherwise it’s looking pretty dry.  Near to above average temperatures from the 26th-29th; near to possibly below average temps from the 30th-31st.
