There is a chance for some patchy freezing rain, sleet, and snow in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin later Tonight through Friday Morning.  Any precipitation that does fall should remain on the light side, but it only takes a small amount of ice to cause difficult driving or walking conditions.  Use caution if you have outdoor plans later Tonight or Friday Morning.  The image below is the surface map valid at 6 AM Friday.  Orange color=freezing rain/sleet potential.  Source, Weather Prediction Center; NDFD.

Because of the threat for light ice accumulations the National Weather Service in Duluth has issued a winter weather advisory for the area shaded in purple on the map.  More information can be found here:  http://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=dlh&wwa=winter%20weather%20advisory

Weather Summary for January 22, 2015
Location:  northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin

Much of the area had overcast skies to start the day, but sunshine broke out in parts of the Northland This Afternoon while far northern Minnesota remained mostly cloudy.  Highs Today were in the mid 20s to around 30 degrees with southwest winds at 10 to 20 mph.

Forecast Discussion for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin

Short Term Forecast – Confidence:  High.

Tonight (January 22)

High pressure remains sprawled out across the central Plains and Ohio Valley while low pressure moves into western Ontario.  A warm front connected to that Ontario low will be moving into Minnesota during the night.  Areas of light freezing rain, sleet, and snow are expected to develop across the Northland Tonight.  Surface temperatures will likely remain below freezing through the night but a layer of warm air aloft will be moving in from the west as 850mb temperatures rise to around +2 to +6C — this will set the stage for possible sleet/freezing rain.  Precipitation that does fall Tonight isn’t expected to be terribly heavy, but remember it only takes a small amount of ice on roads and sidewalks to create very hazardous driving/walking conditions.  Lows will hold steady in the 20s Tonight with southwest winds at 10 to 25 mph.

Friday and Friday Night (January 23)

Low pressure tracks through northern Ontario this period.  Will see a warm front pass through our area Tomorrow Morning/early Afternoon, and then a cold front approaches from the north by late Friday Night.  The Northland will be in the warm sector of this system so we should see high temperatures climb into the 30s with a few spots possibly making a good run at 40 degrees if we see enough sun.  Lows Friday Night will mainly be in the 20s.  Winds will shift from the southwest to the northwest at 10 to 25 mph.  Lingering precipitation in the form of sleet, freezing rain, and snow is possible especially before Noon on Friday, the remainder of this period looks mainly dry.

Extended Forecast – Confidence:  Medium to High.

Saturday through Monday (January 24-26)

A cold front pushes south into the Northland on Saturday while low pressure over northwest Canada dives southeast more or less along that cold frontal boundary from Saturday Night into Sunday.  This system has the potential to produce a couple inches of snow in parts of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin from Saturday Evening into Sunday Morning with lingering flurries and snow showers possible from Sunday Afternoon into Monday.

Highs will be in the 20s and 30s on Saturday and in the teens in far northern Minnesota with 20s and low 30s elsewhere on Sunday.  Highs on Monday will mainly be in the 20s.  Lows Saturday Night will range from the single digits to the 20s with lows Sunday Night ranging from the single digits below to around 20 above.

Long Range Forecast – Confidence:  High.

(January 27-February 1)

Near to above average temperatures are forecast from the 27th-29th with near to possibly below average temperatures from the 30th-1st.  The period from the 27th-1st looks fairly quiet at this time.
