The next round of showers and thunderstorms in Central and Eastern Minnesota late This Afternoon should move into Western and Northern Wisconsin during the next few hours while a lesser chance for showers continues in Northern Minnesota.

Location: Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin
An interesting day as we kick off the month of April. A strong area of low pressure averaging 994mb was over Northwest Minnesota as of 5 PM with a warm front in Central Minnesota and a cold front in Western Minnesota. Partly to mostly cloudy skies were common Today. Scattered showers and thunderstorms erupted during the Afternoon across East Central Minnesota into Northwest Wisconsin as a push of elevated instability approached from the SW. A few of the storms dropped small hail, and there was also a lot of lightning with these storms This Afternoon. There was a huge range in high temperatures Today with 30s and 40s near Lake Superior, 50s and 60s in Northern Minnesota with 60s and even some 70s in Western/Southern portions of the Northland. Winds were out of the south or east at 15 to 25 mph with gusts over 30 mph.

Short Term Forecast – Confidence: High.
Tonight (April 1)
Deep low pressure will track north/northeast of our area Tonight while a warm front and cold front continue to move east with both those boundaries exiting the Northland later in the night. Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are possible Tonight especially in East Central Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin with a lesser chance for showers across Northern Minnesota. The chances for precipitation will end after Midnight. Low temperatures will be in the 40s to around 50 degrees with winds out of the south or east which will turn to the west, northwest, or southwest during the night. Wind speeds will vary between 10-20 mph. Note: Areas of fog are possible Tonight along the North Shore of Lake Superior.
Thursday and Thursday Night (April 2)
Low pressure deepens into the mid 980’s range during this period as it moves into Northern Ontario. A secondary cold front will drop SE through the area Thursday Afternoon with a few showers possible with that boundary in Northern Minnesota — The rest of the area should remain dry. Highs on Thursday will be in the 50s and 60s with lows Thursday Night in the teens and 20s. Gusty west or southwest winds Tomorrow at 15-30 mph with winds turning to the northwest Tomorrow Night at 10 to 20 mph.

Friday through Sunday (April 3-5)
Dry on Friday with highs in the 30s and 40s. A weak disturbance approaching from the NW could produce a few flurries or snow showers in parts of the area Friday Night-Saturday AM. The next chance for precipitation will occur on Sunday as low pressure approaches from the Western High Plains bringing a threat for snow or rain to parts of the Northland.
High temperatures on Friday will be in the 30s to around 40 degrees with lows Friday Night in the teens and 20s. Highs on Saturday will be in the 30s and 40s with 50s in Southern areas, lows Saturday Night will be in the 20s and 30s with teens in far Northern Minnesota. Highs on Sunday will be in the 30s and 40s.

Still monitoring the Monday-Wednesday (6th-8th) time frame for a possible storm system that could affect the Northland with snow or rain. The exact track, timing, and intensity of this storm remains uncertain so stay tuned for more updates in coming days. One thing that has to be watched will be the presence of the Ontario high for next week, this may help to keep this system farther south sparing the Northland from getting too much snow or rain.
